Dovercourt EP

31 Jan

Over the last year I’ve traveled to Canada frequently for gigs and got to know the small but healthy electronic music scene there. Cities like Montreal, Vancouver and Toronto have brought forth many established artists over the past few years, such as Egyptrixx, Azari & III, Basic Soul Unit, Jacques Greene, Lunice and Sixtoo, but 2012 has seen a new breed of no-nonsense house and techno producers come up via labels like Turbo Recordings and Naked Lunch.

This “Dovercourt EP” features four very talented producers: Kevin McPhee, Nautiluss, Gingy and fresh face Bruce Trail. Their tracks are a dedication to their hometown of Toronto. Being removed from the house/techno epicentres of Berlin and London, these four are much less interested in what’s fashionable or trendy, and more in bringing us straight to the point, no frails jacking house music. I’ve been playing these four extensively in my DJ sets, and I hope you will too. So out to Toronto, this one’s for you!

The Uncowl // Swell No Swell EP

29 Jan

As catchy as a rewind in sound system, yet subtle like the smell of summer rain on hot asphalt, Swell No Swell’s 4 tracks has nothing in common with poseur gimmicks and cheesy aesthetics. Perfect junction between catchy technoïd rave sounds and embryotic dubstep, The Uncowl‘s prods are like ruthless wild beasts that hunt at night, and leave others running the sterile race towards flashes and fancy flowers that die just as quick as their fame. Real recognize real. (Fullfridgemusic, 2013) Grab this release for free here.

Stefano Ritteri // Nice Up Your Dance EP

15 Jan

Stefano Ritteri - Nice Up Your Dance EP

Previously releasing crunked up house on the likes of dirtybird, Sound Pellegrino and Exploited under the Solo moniker, Stefano Ritteri returns with the ‘Nice Up Your Dance’ EP on suitably chameleon-like Pets Recordings. Excited by the prospect of releasing a body of work under his real name, Ritteri’s latest output has already been snapped up by Defected and Saved. The new three track ep straddles the more exuberant edges of house with a skilled and serious production sensibility, and invites UK mainstays Jaymo and Andy George to perform remix duties.

‘Nice Up Your Dance’ opens the show with its audacious guitar riff, vintage key work, whimsical vocal sample and relentless party claps, a staple of Ritteri’s club focused productions. While ‘Nice Up Your Dance’ works to tease you into a knowing smile, ‘Let Us Pray’ steps up with a take-your-breath-away bassline, leading the way for the ultra-nostalgic melody line and pitch-shifted vocal. Jaymo and Andy George take things one step further, giving ‘Let Us Pray’ a thick and sultry rework. Here, the bassline truly is all consuming, while dissonant rings add an extra edge to the sonorous vocal sample.

A weird yet very welcome added string to the Pets Recordings bow, Stefano Ritteri’s first outing on the Polish label is sure to set tongues wagging. (Pets Recordings SC, 2013) Beatport here.
