GoldFFinch // The Volume EP

8 Jul

goldffinch volume ep

GoldFFinch are back….back on Saigon Recordings…..back to the dancefloor. POW! 4 new tracks on an EP entitled ‘The Volume’, guess what the first track is called… yes, we don’t do clever EP names. The lead track is smashing up the airwaves/dancefloors, we do sincerely hope that no injuries have occurred due to any aggro-dance moves (we’re not liable). Support across the board from the likes of Paleman, Loefah, Mary Anne Hobbs, Benji B – this supreme Belgian duo are going from strength to strength, fresh from their appearance on the US based Dirtybird label. GoldFFinch/Saigon fully endorse the use of Peacock related imagery. (Surus, 2013) Buy it here. Beatport here.

GoldFFinch // 11th Hour

goldffinch 11th hour

With a change in the season and the promise of balmy city sunsets on the horizon, it feels natural that dirtybird should drop a much welcomed curveball into their 2013 EP catalogue. Courtesy of Belgium born duo, GoldFFinch, the ‘11th Hour’ EP explores the label’s more implicit approach to bass, with all the richly textured, distinctively UK sounds we’ve come to expect from the pair. The EP also marks GoldFFinch’s first original dirtybird release proper, after proving their worth on the heavy hitting Players compilation and remixing French Fries’ ‘Space Alarm’ as an induction.

‘11th Hour’ opens the EP with a beautifully carved intro of muted, sensual synths and a blunted percussion beat that immediately picks out a swinging, London-centric rhythm. As the distant yearn of afterhours city lights emerges, the intro melts into a fluid-yet-funky roller, a languid longing for the urban twilight hour. ‘Sultry Steel’ flirts with UK Garage foundations, as the drums skip along with knowing skill and a slinky vocal sample punctuates the fuzzy atmosphere. As the track name suggests, it’s the steel drum melody that gives the beat its memorable dance floor significance.

Erring on the subtler side of late night bass, dirtybird has uncovered a veritable gem here. Enjoy!

dirtybird Players (Part 2)

11 Mar

DBP_parts_3.0

Part two of the massive dirtybird players compilation is here. This time we feature some of the labels biggest Europe based acts Eats Everything & Catz n Dogz along with some European newcomers GoldFFInch, Friend Within & 6 Stroke.  In addition we still got that old school Cali crew repping with Leroy Peppers and Claude VonStroke as well as our newest addition Mark Starr from Florida.

This half of the comp goes all the way from booty bass to deep house to future dubstep and represents the various styles and directions of the label. Again, we like to keep the words short and sweet and let the music do the talking.

We hope you enjoy it.

French Fries // Space Alarm

22 Oct

French Fries delivers two originals on the cutting edge of modern bass. “Space Alarm” is right up in your face but artfully holds back right when you think it will go over the top. The inside “Smoke Wine” is more in the vein of last years smash “Yo Vogue” yet more understated and deep which is rare for the genre. When I play these at the right time they always solicit an audible “ooooh” from the crowd at the drops. Remix #1 is by Justin Martin who really blows it up dirtybird style with almost a breakbeat old school electro beat. Remix #2 is by dirtybird newcomers GoldFFinch via Belgium who also deliver a really funk laden club version. Both remixes are ace and the full release brings a very fresh sound to the label. (VonStroke, 2012) Out on beatport Oct 31st and everywhere else Nov 13.
