George Morel – Let’s Groove (Claptone Remix)
9 JulGeorge Morel broke new ground with his iconic track “Let’s Groove” – defining a genre and a moment with his sound – a feat achieved by only a precious few. That was in 1992 – when techno & house was the new kid on the block. Now, 21 (!) years later we revisit this colossal track and fit it with some remixes, including one from the man himself. Tom Trago, Claptone, Coyu and DJ T. and PBR Streetgang all take on the dinosaur and give it a new breath of life in 2013. The results are amazing, and even more so when we reflect on all that came between. An entire lifetime of music and celebration lead up to this point, and will continue long after – after all, it is the spirit of the music which never really dies. (Claptone SC, 2013)

Sam Russo // Losing Things
1 MayMeant to post this a month ago but better late than never!
Matt Tolfrey’s Leftroom Limited brings you Sam Russo‘s ‘Losing Things’ this March, backed with a remix from Jack Dixon. Sam Russo has had a long running relationship with the Leftroom label and his collaborative EP ‘The Summer Soundtrack’ with Huxley back in 2011 led to a string of further releases on the imprint, pushing Sam into the limelight and helping to spread his wings further afield releasing original work and remixes with the likes of OFF Recordings, Air London, 1trax and Fullbarr. The release opens with the original version of ‘Losing Things’, employing raw shuffled drums, a bubbling sub bass hook and a processed spoken word vocal line as its driving force. The cut steadily blooms in such a state throughout its near seven and a half minute duration, subtly introducing tweaky acid licks and additional perc lines to fuel its energy. Stepping up next is Hotflush artist Jack Dixon reworking title track ‘Losing Things’. Dixon veers the record in an entirely different direction, creating an ethereal atmosphere with flourishing bell chime melodies and a bulbous sub-bass. The track builds to a peak, where Dixon strips back the groove and puts its focus on drums, bass and vocal snippets. Next we have ‘Delivery’, a low-slung house number with a stripped back vibe, crunchy 909 drums lead the way alongside a gritty saw-wave bass and more tripped out, delayed vocal lines. ‘Mailbox format’ follows, a perfect way to wind down the wax side of the release, Russo takes things deeper here with fluttering pads, a moody evolving bass hook and subtle manipulation on the synthesized elements creating a blossoming dynamic. Offered up, as a digital extra on the package is ‘Not Another Juno Track’, embracing a peak-time edge, with punchy drums, a resonant acidic bass and smooth pads. (Beatport, 2013)

Denis Horvat // The Crook
9 MarMaybe because the winter nights in Denmark offer a little bit more time than in Berlin, the next Upon You digital release (Nr. 009) comes from our young producer Denis Horvat from Copenhagen. The rascal has already sweetened our back stock catalogue once, when he drew the attention of the public with his Sweet & Sour 005. Whether through the dark arrangements in the title track “The Crook”; or the smart vocals in “El Che” feat. Quiroz; or the intense bouncing with “Rise And Shine”; The Crook EP shows that he has only developed further in the mean time.

Sucré Salé // Zuchar and Salt EP
6 JanFollowing the coup of the EP “Trauriger Sonntag” (Sad Sunday – SDR029), “Zucker and Salt” (SDR030) will now be the new stroke. Heinrichs & Hirtenfellner created this one in collaboration with our friends from Paris: Sucré Salé. Both duos have been friends with each other over quite a while yet, but are coming together for the first time to create an amazing piece of music. The base for the song was provided by Sucré Salé with their sound of “Bye Bye”. This exotic quartet turned it into a grandiose remix accompanied by gentle, bitter and joyful sounds that are delivering the sad feelings of a farewell, but on the contrary already transferring feelings of anticipation as for the next reunion. Michel Cleis // Mir A Nero
25 Jul“Mir a Nero” begins with a steady, upbeat kick underlying a simple piano arpeggio – like if Philip Glass make dance music – but then some accents of vibrant hand percussion loosen up the vibe, soon progressing into rhythmic layers that cause the energy to swell. By the 4-minute mark, a subtle, buzzing synth permeates the background, contrasting the track’s overall organic feel, leading into the playful piano chords and colombian vocal hook. Simply put, this is Latin House with that anomalous Pampa Records swagger, drenched with flavor like Sangria-soaked mango.
Flip that baby over and you get “Amaranthus”, named after the famed flower that represents immortality. This piece stands as a color-negative of “Mir a Nero”, an unwavering stomp with just shadows of the piano sample heard earlier. Freeze-dried rather than sun-ripened, “Amaranthus” is a dubby, more technofied counterpart to the A-Side, crafted for deeper and darker moments on the dancefloor. (Pampa Records SC, 2012)
